Two years later Disappear Here cemented their status as one of the classiest Australian indie bands around. The trademark lush guitars were there but the sound broadened to include lashings of punk, garage rock and Brit pop. Although they received critical acclaim, the band never quite cut through for mainstream success. The band ended unexpectedly and tragically in 1999 when William Arthur died, aged 34, of a suspected overdose. Sidewinder Brothers Nick and Martin Craft formed Sidewinder in Canberra at the start of the '90s. Respected local label Half A Cow signed them when Martin was only 15, after Alannah Russack from The Hummingbirds saw one of their shows and began championing them. Falling Joys Another stand-out from the national capital, Falling Joys started producing great tunes in the mid-80s. There, they enlisted enigmatic vocalist Merida Sussex and a couple more players to flesh out their cinematic sound. Their debut album appeared in 1996, the understated Left Over Life To Kill, which set them apart from their distortion-soaked contemporaries. Their next long-player Flight Paths came with denser, richer production that amplified the unsettling quality featured on early releases. After touring around Europe for a couple of years, the trio relocated to Brisbane in 1993. Following some promising early recordings, they released their first full-length album Sand on Seven in 1998. Sung mostly in Riegler's native German, the song borrowed from industrial metal, with its relentless rhythm and wall-of-sound guitars. It scored the band their only triple j Hottest 100 spot when it took the 100 place in the 1998 countdown. A second album Latvian Lovers followed in 2000, but it failed to make the impact of the hailed debut. Crow With a shambolic intensity that earned them comparisons to The Birthday Party, Crow made their mark on the local scene from their first gigs in the late '80s. A line-up change and a delayed release ensued. When My Kind Of Pain finally surfaced it was an accomplished release with a cohesive, mature sound, driven by the songwriting of Peter Fenton and Peter Archer. But the best was yet to come. Crow stayed home to make their second album Li-Lo-ing with local producer Tim Whitten. Not long after its release Archer left the band and, although Crow continued to make fine songs, Li-Lo-ing is still seen by many as their masterwork. They've reformed in recent years and still play many songs from the album in their live shows. Their eponymous debut album came just months later, a collection of punchy indie pop that showcased Kennedy's snarl as well as her sweetness. The song immediately affirmed just how good this line-up could be. Nick Seymour left the band after that release and Deadstar saw a few line-up changes in australische bands last couple of years. Smudge Sydney trio Smudge formed in 1991 and became renowned for their deft lyrics and slacker indie pop vibes.
